April 20, 2020
As we face a public health crisis we were vastly unprepared for, we’re seeing the need for radical change to be prepared to combat future crises. On April 20, 2020, teens and young voters across California demanded Sen. Dianne Feinstein support a People’s Bailout, short-term economic relief and support for people and community health, and for Sen. Feinstein to treat the climate crisis as the emergency it is by backing the Green New Deal to ensure future generations—including her grandchildren—have a habitable planet to live on in a day-long virtual office takeover.
1. Flood the phone lines!
We need to flood Sen. Feinstein’s phone lines throughout the day to make it clear that we won’t let up in our demands. She needs to be inundated with calls from across the state highlighting the need for a People’s Bailout and Green New Deal and other protective measures for the climate and health of all Americans.Call in on my own
2. Social Media Takeover
Even though we can’t take over Sen. Feinstein’s office in-person, we need to make it clear on social media that we need a People’s Bailout and Green New Deal to get through the current public health crisis and face the climate crisis. Throughout the day, we will take over Feinstein’s social media accounts by tweet storming, commenting on and responding to her latest social posts, and flooding her mentions with our demands.Participate in the social media takeover
3. Letters to the Editor
Make it clear to the media that we need a People’s Bailout and a Green New Deal, both things Sen. Feinstein hasn’t backed yet. Send a letter to the editor of your local media outlets to share our demands and calls for Sen. Feinstein to take the coronavirus and climate crises seriously.Send a Letter to the Editor
4. Send a Letter
Don’t have time to call-in to Sen. Feinstein’s office or take over social media? Send a pre-written letter to her to show that we’re not alone in asking for a People’s Bailout and Green New Deal.Send a Letter
5. Signs and Chalking
While dropping banners and sharing art in public may not be safe due to stay-at-home orders, we can still share art in visible places at our own homes asking Feinstein to take the action necessary to combat the climate and coronavirus crises. Demand action by putting up signs in your windows and chalk on your streets.View the art guide
1. People’s Bailout
We need a People’s Bailout, short-term economic relief and support for people and community health. People are struggling now and need immediate government support. COVID-19 is the biggest disruption to our society that we have faced in a generation, and the American people are looking for answers. We know what needs to happen: a stimulus package in line with the five principles of a People’s Bailout and a longer-term recovery to create a society that works for everyone. It is the role of our movement and hubs to bring the vision of this post-pandemic future to the public.
2. Be Prepared for the Next Crisis
Our government was vastly unprepared for the impacts of the current public health crisis caused by COVID-19 in the same way that we are and will continue to be vastly unprepared for the climate crisis, which has the potential to be more deadly, more widespread, and harder to contain than anything we’ve ever dealt with. We need Sen. Feinstein to support the Green New Deal so that we can create a just transition and guarantee our futures.
3. Medicare for All is Needed Now More than Ever
Last year Sen. Feinstein said “I’m not there” on calls to eliminate private health insurance and expand medicare to all Americans.1https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/01/30/kamala-harris-medicare-for-all-dianne-feinstein-reax/ Does she still believe that during a public health crisis when health insurance gaps could fuel the spread2https://news.berkeley.edu/2020/03/10/americas-health-insurance-gaps-could-speed-spread-of-coronavirus/ of coronavirus, especially among historically oppressed frontline and vulnerable communities?3https://abcnews.go.com/Health/make-covid-19-tests-treatment-easy-access-black/story?id=70048090 It’s time for Sen. Feinstein to back a Green New Deal that guarantees Medicare for All.
4. People over profit
Sen. Feinstein says that she is committed to protecting our climate.4https://www.feinstein.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/climate-change If she wants to live up to this commitment, then she should back the Green New Deal. What is stopping her? Perhaps the over $1.3 million she has taken from the fossil fuel industry over her congressional career.5https://www.opensecrets.org/members-of-congress/industries?cid=N00007364&cycle=CAREER It’s time for Sen. Feinstein to choose our future over her climate-denying funders6http://oilchangeusa.org/open-letter-to-sen-feinstein-regarding-no-fossil-fuel-money-pledge/ and stock accounts7http://inthesetimes.com/article/21784/dianne-feinstein-green-new-deal-ocasio-cortez-climate-change-sunrise and commit to not accepting fossil fuel money.
